Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel that penetrates the outer layer of the tooth (the enamel) and breaks down the pigmented molecules responsible for staining. This lightens the overall colour of the tooth. The concentration of the whitening agent — and how long it is applied — determines how much lighter your teeth become.

Is Teeth Whitening safe?

Yes — professional teeth whitening is considered safe when carried out under dental supervision using clinically approved concentrations of whitening agents. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity and mild gum irritation, both of which settle after treatment is completed. We always assess your suitability before recommending whitening and will tailor the treatment to minimise discomfort..

What Types of Whitening are there?

Am I a good candidate for teeth whitening?

  1. Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are suitable candidates for professional whitening.
  2. Whitening is generally not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  3. Untreated cavities or active gum disease should be addressed before whitening begins.
  4. Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel — existing crowns, veneers, and composite fillings will not change colour. We will flag this if it applies to you.
  5. Discolouration caused by internal tooth changes or certain medications may not respond to whitening. We will be upfront about this at your consultation.
  6. We generally recommend whitening for adults from age 18 onwards, once the permanent teeth are fully developed.

Is over-the-counter whitening as effective as professional whitening?

Over-the-counter products such as whitening strips and toothpastes are significantly weaker than professional-grade gels and tend to produce more modest results. Professional whitening uses higher concentrations of whitening agent in custom-fitted trays that ensure even coverage and minimise gum contact. The results are generally faster, more uniform, and longer-lasting.
