How does teeth whitening work?
Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel that penetrates the outer layer of the tooth (the enamel) and breaks down the pigmented molecules responsible for staining. This lightens the overall colour of the tooth. The concentration of the whitening agent — and how long it is applied — determines how much lighter your teeth become.
Is Teeth Whitening safe?
Yes — professional teeth whitening is considered safe when carried out under dental supervision using clinically approved concentrations of whitening agents. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity and mild gum irritation, both of which settle after treatment is completed. We always assess your suitability before recommending whitening and will tailor the treatment to minimise discomfort..

What Types of Whitening are there?

(1) In office whitening
In-office teeth whitening is the fastest and most effective way to brighten your smile. The treatment is performed using professional-strength whitening agents that can lighten teeth by several shades in a single visit. This treatment is ideal for patients who want immediate, noticeable results. While some temporary sensitivity may occur, it usually resolves within a few days.
(2)Take Home Whitening
For take home whitening, custom-made whitening trays are fabricated to fit your teeth precisely. Patients typically wear the trays for a prescribed period each day, usually over one to two weeks. The gradual nature of the treatment often results in less sensitivity compared to intensive whitening procedures. Take-home whitening is an excellent option for patients who prefer to whiten at their own pace and maintain their results with occasional touch-ups.
(3) Post- hygiene whitening
Post-Hygiene Whitening is a gentle whitening treatment designed to be performed immediately after a professional scaling and polishing appointment. Following the removal of plaque, tartar, and surface stains during your hygiene visit, the whitening treatment helps further enhance the brightness of your smile. This procedure is ideal for patients seeking a quick cosmetic boost
Am I a good candidate for teeth whitening?
- Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are suitable candidates for professional whitening.
- Whitening is generally not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Untreated cavities or active gum disease should be addressed before whitening begins.
- Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel — existing crowns, veneers, and composite fillings will not change colour. We will flag this if it applies to you.
- Discolouration caused by internal tooth changes or certain medications may not respond to whitening. We will be upfront about this at your consultation.
- We generally recommend whitening for adults from age 18 onwards, once the permanent teeth are fully developed.
Is over-the-counter whitening as effective as professional whitening?
Over-the-counter products such as whitening strips and toothpastes are significantly weaker than professional-grade gels and tend to produce more modest results. Professional whitening uses higher concentrations of whitening agent in custom-fitted trays that ensure even coverage and minimise gum contact. The results are generally faster, more uniform, and longer-lasting.
How Long Do Whitening Results Last?
Whitening results typically last between 6 months and 3 years, depending on your diet and lifestyle. Foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, and soy sauce, as well as smoking, are the main culprits for re-staining.
Many patients do a short top-up treatment periodically to maintain their results. Good oral hygiene also helps prolong the effect.
