Mouth Guards

A mouth guard is a removable appliance that fits over your teeth to protect them from impact, pressure, or grinding forces. Whether you need one depends on your situation — but if you play contact sports, or if your dentist has spotted signs of tooth grinding (known as bruxism), a mouth guard is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your teeth from damage that can be expensive and sometimes irreversible to repair.

What damage can grinding cause if left untreated??

Over time, grinding and clenching can cause significant wear to the tooth surfaces — flattening, chipping, and in severe cases cracking teeth. It can also contribute to jaw pain, headaches, facial muscle tension, and in some people, problems with the jaw joint (the TMJ). The damage caused by years of grinding can be costly and complex to restore, which is why early intervention with a night guard is worthwhile.

How do I look after my mouth guard?

  1. Rinse your mouth guard with water before and after each use.
  2. Clean it with a soft toothbrush and mild soap. Avoid hot water, which can warp the material.
  3. Store it in the ventilated case provided when not in use — this prevents bacteria build-up and maintains its shape.
  4. Bring it to your dental appointments so we can check its condition and fit.
  5. Replace it as advised — sports guards typically last 1 to 3 years; night guards 3 to 5 years or more, depending on grinding severity.

How do I know if I’m grinding my teeth at night?

Many people are unaware they grind or clench during sleep. Common signs include: waking up with a sore or tired jaw, frequent morning headaches (especially around the temples), a partner telling you they can hear grinding sounds, or noticing that your teeth look flatter or more worn than they used to. Your dentist can also identify grinding patterns from wear visible during a routine check-up.
