I am missing a tooth , how should I replace it ?

Tooth loss can be due to decay trauma and even gum disease . Tooth loss can affect appearance and function and have an impact on quality of life .

There are different methods for replace missing teeth and each options have their advantages and disadvantages

(1) Dentures

A denture is a removable prosthesis used to replace missing teeth.

Advantages:
– Able to replace long spans
– Lower cost
– Non invasive 

Disadvantages
– Period of adaptation required
– Chewing function may not be very high but still possible
– Multiple visits required

(2) Implants

An Implant is a medical grade titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone .

For an implant to be functional it consists of the screw component known as fixture and it carries the portion that resembles a natural tooth known as a crown

Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple missing teeth or to replace teeth in cases with complete tooth loss.
However , for an implant to work it requires sufficient bone

Advantages :
– Non-removable
– High biting forces
– Cannot decay

Disadvantage :
– Minor surgery
– May be susceptible to gum problem
– Require sufficient bone

(3) Bridge

A conventional  bridge is a fixed dental prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth to two adjacent teeth with crowns .

A bridge is commonly made up of porcelain and metal and will require having adjacent teeth to be prepared

Advantages:
– Non Removable
– Stronger biting forces than dentures

Disadvantage :
– May sacrifice two perfectly healthy teeth
– Difficult to maintain & clean

Which method is the best for my conditions?

Each method has their advantages and disadvantages . Theses methods may not be suitable in certain clinical conditions .

Being Wise with Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that usually erupts between 18 to 26 years old .

My wisdom tooth is coming out , do I need to get them out ??

As the wisdom teeth is erupting , many people would wonder if removal of wisdom tooth is necessary.

If the wisdom teeth are in good alignment after erupting, they can function like a normal molar .
However , wisdom tooth are commonly not in a good alignment and can be impacted . In this situations , theses wisdom teeth are difficult to clean and can lead to swelling of the gums (peri-coronitis) or even decay if they are not well looked after.
As such when there is decay or swelling , the wisdom teeth may be required to be removed

Nevertheless , it would be advisable to visit your dentist and check if a removal of your wisdom teeth is required.

Is wisdom removal always a surgery? Can I just have them extracted normally.

In situations where the alignment of the wisdom teeth is good and there is sufficient space in the mouth , a wisdom tooth removal via extraction is possible .

However in many cases , wisdom tooth alignment are usually not in the right direction .In such cases , surgery is usually required for the wisdom tooth to be removed .

Some important details regarding wisdom tooth removal

Wisdom tooth removal is usually medisave claimable for Singaporeans & Permanent residents.

An x-ray will be taken to check if a surgery is required .

After a wisdom tooth surgery , there will usually be some swelling and down time.
Patients are strongly encouraged to have a good rest at home and medical certification will be given .

Toothache/pain?

Help, I am having some toothache . Should I go see the dentist  ?

Yes ! When a toothache occurs , it would definitely be wise to see the dentist and have the problem resolved or looked at .

Toothache , Dental Pain ,

A toothache is a pain that can be in or around the tooth
The intensity of the pain can range from mild to severe throbbing pain and can be affecting your quality of life .

Toothache can be due to various reasons such as:
(a) tooth decay
(b) gum infection
(c) abscess
(d) Impacted wisdom tooth
(e) Grinding
(f) Cracked tooth & Others

A toothache can also lead to fever , swelling and intensity of the pain can also worsen with time.
Hence , seeing a dentist would make sense when you have a toothache !

What would the dentist do when I visit them  ?

On the first visit at kin dental centre , the dentist would usually do a comprehensive check which may include x-rays (periapicals/bitewings)( “small” x-rays) or a orthopanogram ( ” big x-ray”) to determine the cause of the pain .

Treatment can range from having to do
(a) extractions
(b) root canal treatment
(c) scaling

These treatments are usually performed under local anaesthesia to make the process more comfortable .
Painkillers are usually prescribed as well to help with pain management
